New potatoes

Been doing my favorite thing for a few weeks now. Digging up new potatoes and enjoying the early harvest. I'm not sure why growing potatoes makes me so happy, must be the ancestral Irish blood, but I always find myself in a great mood after unearthing a few of these goodies.

Potato gardening should be instituted as therapy. Dig up the purple and chase away the blues.

The Harvest Begins

First Zucchini of the season.

New Potatoes.

Cherries.

First Raspberry of the season.

And so it begins. Still waiting on the gooseberry to ripen.

It does look like there could be trouble on the tomato front though and I'm not the only one reporting this. I've read other blogs with similar issues.

There is fruit on the vines, but also yellowing and curling leaves on practically every plant. Worried that white fly might have visited. Haven't seen any.

I've always had great luck with tomatoes, so this is concerning. Wet weather, overwatering or the burst of cold we had could be a contributing factor. Been trimming off the yellow leaves and letting the plants dry out completely between waterings. They are happier with that.

New Potatoes

Dug up some Russian Blue new potatoes this morning for breakfast. The dark purplish skins made them difficult to find in the soil, but aren't they gorgeous?!  Can't wait to tuck into these.

The potato interiors were equally exciting to behold. I am doubling up my order of these next season.

As I was composting the the leaves of the plant I noticed a bonus... potato berries hanging from the vines.

Each berry has a pile of little seeds inside. The berries are slightly oblong, unlike the very round Yukon Gold potato berries. I'm going to open them and dry the tiny seeds inside. These are keepers.
